Profile

If you have attended an MKI training at Urban Edge, chances are you’ve met Brenda Salgado. She joined Urban Edge in 2016 and is often the first friendly face you see when you walk into the office—affectionately known as the “Director of First Impressions.” As the Office Assistant, Brenda’s days are filled with greeting staff and visitors, coordinating monthly staff meetings and events, managing training and meeting room rentals, keeping daily office operations running smoothly, and supporting Urban Edge’s Wellness Program. She also assists with onboarding new staff, coordinates group events, orders office-wide supplies, and logs incoming checks. Brenda takes pride in creating a welcoming, organized, and positive environment for everyone who walks through the door.

Before arriving at Urban Edge, Brenda spent 20 years building her career as a beauty consultant and group coordinator in high-end spas and salons in Boston. Her background is rooted in exceptional customer service, relationship-building, and managing daily operations. Throughout Brenda’s career, creating welcoming, high-quality experiences have always been at the core of her work. In 2019, she was voted Employee of the Year by her colleagues, reflecting her commitment to teamwork, service, and creating a positive workplace culture.

MKI: What inspired you to pursue a career in the community building field?

Brenda: I was looking for a job [in the Boston area] that aligned with my skills and experience, and this opportunity felt like a great fit. Over time, the work itself inspired me—the chance to build connections, support others, and make a positive impact in the community.

MKI: How did you discover the Mel King Institute?

Brenda: I learned about MKI through my role at UE and the partnership between our organizations. Providing training space allowed me to see firsthand the impact of MKI work and the value of our collaboration.

MKI: Is there a project or event at Urban Edge that you’re looking forward to in the new year?

Brenda: I’m looking forward to our annual fundraising event in the new year. It’s always a highlight for me—the program, live entertainment, and reconnecting with familiar faces make it a special event.

MKI: What are some of your passions and favorite activities outside of work?

Brenda: Outside of work, I enjoy listening to R&B music, attending live concerts, and dancing. I also prioritize staying active by working out and spending time outdoors, especially going on nature hikes. I enjoy caring for plants, eating healthy, and sharing beauty tips—it’s a fun way for me to relax and connect with others.
