Build a foundation in affordable housing asset management!

Whether you’re new to asset management, taking on new responsibilities or want to strengthen your organization's portfolios, Nuts and Bolts of Asset Management will help you understand how to assess a property’s performance and support its long-term success. You’ll learn the language, core responsibilities, and practical tools used by affordable housing asset managers.

This course is the first step in CHAM’s Asset Management Specialist (AMS) certificate program.

Schedule: 8:30 AM Check-in, 9:00 AM Start, 1 hour lunch ~ 12:00 PM, 4:00 PM end.

This course is in person and includes coffee, snacks, and a catered lunch for both days.

What you'll learn:

  • The double bottom line concept of affordable housing ownership – the theory of steering properties toward both business and mission-based goals and outcomes.
  • Key asset management functions and responsibilities through the life stages of property – planning, construction, lease up, operations and disposition – with a focus on the critical interrelationship between these stages.
  • Basic number-crunching of key property performance indicators designed to increase understanding of these indicators, as well as their relationship to financial and operational health and long-term viability. This includes revenue, occupancy, expense and financial ratios as well as trend projection analysis.
  • Training on the review and analysis of property financial reports and property/partnership audits as well as best practices for tracking, measuring and assessing progress toward key operational and financial performance.

Who should attend:

This course is designed for new asset management staff, professionals taking on asset management duties, property managers, board members, and executives who oversee affordable housing portfolios. It’s also a useful introduction for anyone who works alongside asset managers and wants to better understand their role.
