Beyond Busing: Latinx Movements for Educational Justice in Boston
LEARNING AREA: Racial Equity, Community Organizing and Planning
Location

Description
Boston's racial history remains centered on a school "busing" narrative that renders the Latino community invisible and often erases grassroots activism. Latino families, particularly working-class mothers, have always been active organizers in the fight for educational justice. Dr. Cruz examines the long history of Latina/o educational organizing in the 1960s and 1970s driven by ideas of community control and the right to bilingual education; the racialization of Latina/o/x students in schools; and the impact of court-ordered desegregation on the movement.
