UMass Boston is pleased to introduce the Federal Work Study Internship Program (FWSIP): the FWSIP Program is a strategic initiative we are implementing in the Fall 2021 semester to increase our off-campus internships and we have identified you as a strategic employer partner.

The FWS Internship Program supports employers in subsidizing student wages for off-campus internships. 

The Department of Education has chosen UMass Boston as a Federal Work Study (FWS) Experimental Site. This experiment grants waivers to specific Federal Work Study regulations to increase opportunities for academic/career related internships. 

Program Goals: 

  • Increase partnerships between UMass Boston and industry 
  • Improve college retention and completion rates among UMass Boston students 
  • Reduce student debt levels 
  • Improve post-graduate employment outcomes 

Financial Coverage of Internships: FWS funds can be used to cover the following costs: 

Students are paid through UMass Boston paychecks. Organizations will receive an invoice on their wage share contributions. 

Individual or Cohort Model: Employers can hire an individual intern or hire a group/cohort of students 

Program Options*: 

  • Fall Part-time Internship:  September-December 2021
  • Spring Part-time Internship: January-May 2022
  • Summer Internship: June 2022 (Potential extension option) 

*Start dates and weeks are flexible, but must be acknowledged upon contractual agreement between all parties 

Restrictions: 

  • Internship placements cannot be used to fill or displace designated FTE (full-time equivalent) positions or employees.   

Deadline to Express Interest:  

  • Priority Deadline: Monday, September 13th      
    • All other inquiries will be assessed on a rolling basis until the program is filled 
    • Employers will be notified with next steps upon emailing intent to join the program
