Healthy sustainable housing for your neighborhood

May 21, 2009

As CDCs & nonprofits we work to provide safe affordable housing. At the same time, asthma and related environmentally sensitive health problems are at the highest in our neighborhoods. Join us at a morning seminar on May 21 to get a better understanding of healthy housing principles and tips and discussions about how to bring this to residents.

Lead by John Mahony, the seminar will be geared to organizers and the need to bring these ideas to residents and tenants in real terms that can help them.

Building a Development Pipeline

May 27, 2009
May 28, 2009

Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP) and the Mel King Institute for Community Building are sponsoring 2 two-day trainings for CDCs on building a development pipeline. These sessions will increase the skills of program staff and their overall capacity for finding development opportunities, managing a pipeline of viable projects, identifying projects, completing very early project feasibility assessments, matching development opportunities with funding resources, and moving projects through the pre-development process and into development.

The two-day training will include:

  • Tools for identifying potential projects and quickly assessing sites and financial feasibility to maintain a viable pipeline of projects appropriate for the organizations size and capacity;

  • Assessment of current market and funding conditions, so that the agency is advancing a healthy pipeline of projects consistent with its organizational mission, capacity, financial and political realities;
  • Tools and techniques for forming a framework for regularly re-assessing whether or not it is appropriate to continue pursuing a specific deal;
  • How to undertake a feasibility assessment and assess projects adequately to proceed to the initial stages of development (e.g. applying for a CEDAC predevelopment loan); and
  • How to plan for next steps in development (e.g. building the whole team, budgeting, and time management).

This training session will be led by VIVA Consulting.
