On behalf of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council, the Boston Indicators Project at The Boston Foundation, and Northeastern
University, you are invited to attend Data Day 2012, a free one-day conference on using data and technology to drive community change.
Data Day is biennial conference to help communities expand their capacity to use data to advance their goals. At Data Day, nonprofit organizations, civic institutions and municipalities come together to see the latest in technology and tools and learn how other groups are using data to support and advance constructive change. It is structured around a series of “how to” interactive workshops in which people who work with data will explain what they do, where they find useful data, and how they use it.
The conference will feature trainings and information about how to access and use Census 2010 data and the new MetroBoston DataCommon online mapping tool, and will also feature the latest technology and information resources. Workshops and sessions range from beginner to advanced.
Highlights during Data Day 2012 will include:
- Hands-on workshops on how to access Census 2010 and American Community Survey data for your community
- The launch of the new version of the MetroBoston DataCommon, with expanded data visualization tools
- Workshops on WEAVE (Web-based Analysis and Visualization Environment), the web-based open source data visualization software that will power the new DataCommon
- Sources of local data about your neighborhood

Data Day is seeking posters illustrating the use of data to investigate neighborhood issues and map community assets and information.
Posters featuring projects using data to explore a wide range of topics is sought, including community identity and change, demographics, housing, environmental quality, and transportation. Neighborhood-level projects are preferred.
